Draft or spillage testing is performed where applicable to the venting system — it applies to natural-draft and B-vent installations, whereas a direct-vent fireplace is a sealed combustion system and is evaluated differently.
One symptom worth acting on: a pilot that repeatedly goes out can indicate an appliance or venting problem and should be professionally diagnosed. The right time is late spring through early fall. Schedules are open, roofs are dry, and any repair the inspection turns up can be completed before you want a fire. Demand climbs sharply starting in October, and availability tightens from there.
