What type of firewood should I choose? Start with dryness, then species

The question "what type of firewood should I choose" usually gets answered with a species list, but dryness matters more than the name on the log. A piece of well-seasoned poplar will burn cleaner than a piece of green oak, even though oak carries far more heat per cord. Species determines how long the fire lasts and how much heat you get. Moisture determines how cleanly it burns and how much residue ends up on the inside of your flue.

EPA Burn Wise recommends burning only dry, seasoned wood with a moisture content of 20% or less, and recommends checking it with an inexpensive moisture meter rather than guessing. A meter costs less than a tank of gas. Split a piece, press the pins into the freshly exposed face — not the weathered outside — and read the number.

Once you have dry wood, species is the second decision. Dense hardwoods hold more energy per volume, so they burn longer and produce a deeper coal bed. Lighter woods light easily and are useful for kindling and shoulder-season fires when you do not want a hot, long-burning load.

Hardwood versus softwood: what the difference actually means

Hardwoods come from deciduous, broad-leafed trees — oak, hickory, ash, maple, beech, birch, black locust, cherry. Softwoods come from conifers — pine, spruce, fir, cedar, hemlock. The names refer to botany, not literal hardness, but in practice most hardwoods are denser and hold more heat per cord.

Softwood is not forbidden. It ignites quickly and makes excellent kindling, and in much of the country it is burned as a primary fuel without incident. The caution with pine and other resinous softwoods is that they are often burned unseasoned, they burn fast and at lower temperatures once the initial flare dies down, and the combination of cool flue gases and heavy smoke encourages deposits. Season softwood as thoroughly as hardwood and burn it hot, or keep it for starting fires.

One persistent myth deserves correcting: no species of firewood cleans your chimney. Creosote forms when smoke condenses on flue surfaces that are cooler than the gases passing over them. The measures that generally help are dry fuel, hot fires, correct appliance operation, and regular sweeping and inspection.

How to season firewood so it actually dries

Seasoning is not storage. A round log left whole in a shady pile can sit for a long time and still be wet inside. Wood dries from the split faces and the ends, so the work you do at the woodpile determines the fuel you get in January.

Split it to the size you will burn, ideally six inches or less across the face. Stack it in single rows with air gaps between pieces, off the ground on pallets or rails, in a spot that gets sun and prevailing wind. Cover the top only — a tarp wrapped down the sides traps moisture and defeats the whole exercise. Humid Coastal Plain summers slow drying, so give oak in eastern North Carolina the full two summers rather than one.

Signs that a piece is ready: it is noticeably lighter than a green piece of the same size, the ends have visible radial checking, the bark loosens or falls off, and two pieces knocked together give a sharp crack rather than a dull thud. Those signs are useful indicators, but a moisture meter gives the most reliable reading.

What not to burn

Some fuels create hazards that chimney maintenance alone does not address. Public safety guidance, including EPA Burn Wise, advises against burning treated, painted or manufactured wood products in home appliances.

Keep this list off the fire regardless of how convenient the material is:

  • Pressure-treated, painted, stained or glued lumber, including plywood, OSB and pallets of unknown origin — these can release corrosive and toxic combustion products.

  • Driftwood and any salt-exposed wood, which can produce corrosive compounds in the flue.

  • Green, unseasoned wood of any species. It burns cool, smokes heavily and drives creosote formation.

  • Rotten or punky wood. It has lost much of its energy content and produces smoke without meaningful heat.

  • Trash, cardboard with printing or coatings, gift wrap, and large amounts of paper, which can produce flames and flying embers well beyond what the appliance is designed for.

  • Coal or charcoal in an appliance not listed for that fuel. Burning charcoal indoors can produce carbon monoxide, and public safety guidance advises against it.

Why wood choice shows up inside your chimney

Every fire deposits something. Wet or smoldering fires deposit far more. As unburned volatiles cool on flue walls they form creosote, which is combustible — the Chimney Safety Institute of America identifies creosote buildup as a leading cause of chimney fires. The U.S. Fire Administration reports on heating-related residential fires each year, which is why fuel choice is a safety topic and not just an efficiency one.

Buying firewood in North Carolina without getting shorted

Firewood is sold by the cord — a stacked volume of 128 cubic feet, typically 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet. A "face cord" or "rick" is one stack the width of the log length and is a fraction of a full cord, so it is worth asking which you are buying and at what log length. A truckload is not a unit of measure.

Ask when the wood was cut and split, not when it was "seasoned." Ask the species mix. If a seller offers oak cut this spring as ready to burn, it is not. Buy in spring for the following winter and finish the drying yourself; that habit tends to do more for burn quality than most other purchasing decisions.
