Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning before the schedule says so

Symptoms beat the calendar. If any of these show up, have the vent cleaned regardless of when it was last done.

  • Loads that used to take 40 minutes now take two cycles.

  • The dryer cabinet, or the clothes coming out of it, feel unusually hot.

  • A burning or scorched smell during a cycle.

  • The laundry room gets humid or the room feels warmer than usual while the dryer runs.

  • The exterior vent flap does not open, or opens only slightly, while the dryer is running.

  • Visible lint around the outside termination, or a bird nest, wasp nest or debris in the hood.

  • The dryer shuts off mid-cycle on its own — many machines have a thermal cutoff that trips when exhaust cannot escape.

  • No air movement you can feel at the outside hood with the dryer on.

Why lint buildup matters

Lint is fine, dry, combustible cellulose sitting in a duct that carries hot air. As it accumulates, exhaust slows, moisture and heat back up into the machine, and the dryer runs hotter and longer than it was designed to. There is a second issue with gas dryers. A gas dryer vents combustion byproducts, including carbon monoxide, through the same duct that carries moist air.
